Tent Pixel

A fictitious online campaign that looks to matchmake kiwis and travellers with Aotearoa's best campsites.

Context

Department of Conservation (DOC) serves as the face for discovering the great outdoors in Aotearoa New Zealand. The problem, however, is that the organisation’s website where travellers would discover the Great Walks, Huts and Campsites is niggly to navigate and unengaging to interact with. Adding to these insights is the inevitable regrowth of the tourism sector in New Zealand following COVID 19. Creating fun, engaging ways for potential visitors and kiwis to be connected with overnight experiences in Aotearoa is, therefore, an essential part of this bounce back.

Objective

DOC's hut dataset provided many great metrics for me to explore, and that whilst perhaps there weren’t any outliers or patterns per se, there was a fresh opportunity to revision the process of finding a campsite in New Zealand. As a result, TentPixel is an API that with the help of a kaitiaki (guide) in the form of a Kea bird, guides you through 4-5 key questions inspired by the metrics from the data.

Solution

Tent Pixel is a fictitious online campaign that looks to matchmake Kiwis and travellers with Aotearoa's best campsites. Using the Department of Conservation's Hut datasets and backed by the opportunity to regenerate the tourism sector in New Zealand in a post-COVID world, Tent Pixel is a gameful take on a practical tool. The online campaign would capture the real-life experience of going on a kiwi road trip and finding a campsite — all whilst regenerating kiwis engagement with the great outdoors.
